I had the chance to work on several species of sabertooth cats for the series : Smilodon Fatalis, Smilodon Populator and Homtherium. My favorite to design was the Smilodon Populator. I tried to find a pattern that was believable and original and I am pretty happy with the result. I was inspired from both pseudo melanistic and golden tigers.
First we follow a Homotherium pride stalking a Mammoth herd, led by a scarred charismatic female. The homotherium pattern is inspired from Snow Leopards and Lynxes. Then we have explorations on Smilodon Fatalis and Smilodon Populator, playing with tiger and Ocelot inspired patterns. Scientific evidence shows that teenage smilodons had both milk tooth and adult tooth for some while resulting in double fangs.
